Welcome to 1BH’s class page!

Mrs Belsham (Monday-Thursday) and Mrs Hills (Friday) are the Class Teachers and Mrs Lask is the Teaching Assistant.

We understand that the transition from a very play-based Reception class into Year 1 can seem rather scary and serious. However, we would like to reassure you that whilst we do work hard we also have lots of fun learning new things and improving our skills through our topic- based curriculum.

We try early on to get the children used to working independently in their groups in the mornings. Our day starts with Guided Reading activities and we then do Maths, Literacy and RE in mixed ability groups. In the afternoons we operate a carousel system of fun topic-based activities covering the foundation subjects: Art, Science, ICT, Music etc. The children have daily opportunities to extend their learning themselves through our independent topic challenges.

Home Learning is given out on a Friday. Please return completed home learning by the following Wednesday.

Reading books are given out twice a week (Tuesdays and Fridays) – please can you ensure the reading books and log books are returned inside your child’s plastic wallet. The books will alternate between a ‘stage book’ for your child to read to you and a library book for you to read to/with your child.

Spelling tests are usually on a Wednesday.

We do PE on a Tuesday (indoors) and a Friday (outdoors).

We are encouraging as much independence as possible, so the children will be responsible for emptying their book bags and handing in reading books, letters and home learning. We will remind the children at the beginning of every day to do this.

We are all very excited about this year and the learning journey we are embarking on!

The curriculum leaflet below will tell you what we will be learning in the Autumn term.
