As a broad statement of intent the Governing Body of St. Walburga’s School aims to provide a curriculum which challenges pupils by high expectations, whilst at the same time is sensitive to the needs of individuals and their widely varying circumstances, abilities and stages of development.
The aims listed below are a basis for the education of pupils in the school.

• to help all pupils to explore and understand the world in which they live and the interdependence of individuals, groups and nations;
• to help all pupils to express themselves creatively and enjoy the contribution of the arts to the quality of life;
• to help all pupils learn how to study both independently and collaboratively;
• to help all pupils see learning as an enjoyable, purposeful activity;
• to help all pupils set high personal standards of achievement and value excellence in all things;
• to promote mutual respect between all members of the school community;
The school’s curriculum consists of all those activities designed or encouraged to promote the intellectual, personal, social, physical, spiritual and moral development of its pupils.
As a Catholic school we teach pupils to respect every person as a unique individual, created and loved by God. We do not accept bullying or denigration of any individual or group. Our curriculum, our assemblies and our behaviour policy are all based on Gospel values of love, justice and respect. Our school community embraces pupils from a wide range of ethnic and social backgrounds. Respect for difference is the lived experience of our pupils.
Our school looks outward to the local community, the national community and the wider world. Our school council enables pupils to learn about democracy in action.
Pupils study Religious Education, the Core Subjects (English, Mathematics and Science), the Foundation Subjects (Art, Computing, Design Technology, Geography, History, Music, P.E. and French) and P.S.H.E. (Personal, Social and Health Education) throughout their time at St. Walburga’s School. Programmes of Study and Assessment arrangements are those outlined in the National Curriculum and are available to view in the school.
The majority of the teaching of English and Mathematics is taught through daily Literacy and Numeracy Hours, the remaining subjects are often covered in half-termly or termly topics. In the Junior classes there is much more emphasis on single subject teaching in preparation for the move to secondary school.
We teach phonics through the Letters and Sounds Scheme. This is used throughout the school particularly in the foundation stage and key stage one. We use a wide variety of reading schemes, covering fiction and non-fiction, including Rigby Star and Oxford Reading Tree. More confident readers are able to choose from class readers and a well stocked library. The scheme is continued at home. We encourage children to read daily at home and this is monitored via a home-school communication book.
Throughout the school priority is given to the teaching of the fundamental skills of literacy and numeracy in order to enable effective achievement in other areas of the curriculum. As a Catholic school, the teaching of R.E. and the living out of our faith is given a very high status. The school follows the 'God Matters' R.E. scheme, which is the programme recommended by the diocese. As well as deepening our understanding of our own faith, it also teaches aspects of all the major world faiths and encourages the pupils to respect followers of all religions or none. Parents are given a curriculum leaflet each term outlining the key areas of learning taking place within each subject. These can be found on the individual class pages.
Teaching staff employ a variety of teaching methods and classroom organisation, suiting the method with the work being taught.
When planning, the teachers use their assessment of the children’s abilities to match the work to the varying abilities of the class. For some activities the children may be grouped according to ability, while at other times they may work in mixed ability groups or individually.
Where learning problems exist, the teachers can draw on the help and expertise of our Inclusion Co-ordinator who can help the children by assessing their needs and working with the class teacher on drawing up a structured learning programme to tackle their difficulties. Children may be supported in their learning by a special needs assistant. The school may also draw on the support and expertise of the Educational Psychologist, Speech Therapist and other forms of educational or medical guidance. The school follows the SEN Code of Practice which provides a well recognised structure to ensure that children will get the help they need and that their education is as free from difficulties as possible. Parents play a very important part in the process and are informed and involved at all stages. The school is organised into sixteen classes. In the school 23.5 hours is spent on teaching the curriculum. (This does not include time spent on registration, collective worship and breaks.)
Sex Education is not taught in the narrowest sense of the term, but through a whole school policy on Personal and Social Education, and is set within the context of the church’s teaching on sexual relationships. As far as possible, it is integrated into other areas of the curriculum, for example Religion and Science. Children’s queries are answered naturally and openly as and when they arise, giving due regard to a child’s age and level of maturity. The teaching resources used are carefully matched to the needs and ages of the pupils concerned. A meeting is held for parents of Year 6 children before the topic of puberty is taught, in order for parents to support the work of the school at home. Parents have the right to withdraw their child from all or part of the sex education provided.
